Winter at Northstar

I'm back to work for my 2 week hitch and am very ready to get out of here on 2/2/07 and head to Kauai. That's my next planned trip!

In the meantime, here is a picture Mike took from the helicopter today, around 11:45 AM or so. It's still not really daylight up here, just a bit of a sunrise that merges into a sunset. Today was a bit cloudy, so the light isn't very good.

Anyway, this is a picture of Northstar all iced in, and a large lead in the ice that opened up along the north side. It's probably 30 to 40 foot wide. This usually happens in Oct or Nov and should be frozen pretty solid by now. The wind should shift direction tonight so it will probably be squeezed back into a small crack in the ice by tomorrow. It's a good thing that our ice road approaches from the south!
