I guess it's time to get back to some of my summer house projects.

I know I've been in my house almost 10 years, but I've never gotten around to finishing the exterior door thresholds. Plus some of the doors get exposed to a lot of snow so the jambs get rather weathered. Today I started a project to get them fixed up before winter.

Peeling Paint

Paint sanded

And some of the thresholds still have a plastic protective covering on them. So I had to peel off the plastic and scrub off the sticky residue before I could sand them. Others have been worn off so they only needed to be sanded.

Plastic Threshold Cover

I got 3 doors mostly done today. The thresholds got 2 coats of stain & exterior urethane. Tomorrow they'll need to be lightly sanded and get another coat or 2 of urethane.

But the jambs are painted and should be good for the next couple of years.

And when these 3 doors are done, I have 3 more to do.Lori Murrayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12265059836589177475noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21891143.post-61752057658163347142019-05-08T22:03:00.000-08:002019-05-08T22:03:47.851-08:002019 - Spring Project #1<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">We are having a very early spring. This time of May I usually have snow and ice in my driveway. It's still a bit chilly, but the grass is green and I've been able to get started on my summer projects. I have quite a list this year, since I'll be home all summer....!
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">So last week I dug out the back fill against the west side and front of my house. Then I primed the new cement board and let it dry for a few days. It was supposed to rain and I'm glad it didn't.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">On Monday I crawled around in the dirt and painted it all black, so it will match the cement board under the siding on the rest of the house. That wasn't much fun, and I'm glad it's done.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">It's time for another epic 'girls (and Lowry) trip'. This one we've been planning for about a year, and it's finally coming together.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Part 1 - walking from Porto to Santiago de Compostela.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">After walking part of the French Way from Saint Jean Pied de Port to Santiago with Liz some years ago (I only got a little past Pamplona before I ran out of time), I've been wanting to walk more of the "Way of St. James". So we decided to do the last 2 weeks of the Portuguese Camino de Santiago. It starts in Porto and runs mostly inland up through northern Portugal then into Spain. And instead of carrying our packs and staying in the hostels (albergues) we decided to book a pre-planned trip, using Portugal Green Walks. Jose set up all of our hotel rooms and will transport our luggage each day, so we only need to carry day packs.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">If you aren't familiar with the Way of St. James, there is a lot of info about it on-line. And the movie "The Way" with Martin Sheen is an interesting introduction to the main route, the French Way.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Anyway, after a couple of days exploring Porto (and visiting a couple of the port tasting cellars), we depart on Wednesday October 3rd on our hike. Here is a link to our itinerary, the only change we made was to add an extra day in Valenca/Tui as a rest day So we'll do the approx 150 miles in 13 days. We plan to arrive in Santiago on Monday October 15th and will spend 2 nights so we get a chance to explore Santiago for a day.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">https://www.portugalgreenwalks.com/activities/portuguese-camino-de-santiago/
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Part 2 - Southern Spain
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">After exploring Santiago, we fly to Seville on Wed Oct 17th, to meet up with the rest of our group (who will have been touring other parts of Spain including Madrid and Barcelona). Most of us will spend a week in Seville (a few of the hikers need to leave early and head back to work, bummer). We've used VRBO and rented a beautiful townhouse in the old town, to use as our base for exploring.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">https://www.homeaway.com/vacation-rental/p6495064
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I'm really looking forward to eating tapas and drinking morning coffee on the roof top terrace.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">While in Seville we have booked 2 walking tours to get oriented to the city. Both on Thursday booked through "Not Just a Tourist". The first is a 2 hour panoramic walking tour, then later in the afternoon we have a guided tour of Alcazar and Cathedral.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">https://notjustatourist.com/?c=890ca7737572
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">On Saturday we plan to take the train to Cordoba for the day and do some exploring. Then on<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> Monday we've booked another private day long tour of the White Villages which includes a lunch and wine tasting. The rest of the time in Seville we'll spend exploring the city.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Wednesday October 24th, we catch a train to Cadiz for 2 nights, with a hotel right on the beach. This should be a good break, and I'm interested in spending part of the day walking through the old part of the city.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">https://www.palafoxhoteles.com/en/cadiz-hotels/hotel-playa-victoria
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Friday October 26th we head over to Tarifa, about 1.5 hours from Cadiz. We've booked rooms at very cute hotel across from the port.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">http://www.hostalalameda.com/en/
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Saturday we're going to take the ferry over to Tangiers and have booked a day long private tour with Said Tours. By this point there will just be 8 of us, but exploring Tangiers for a day should be really interesting Though I'm not sure I'm interested in riding a camel...lol.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">https://www.saidtours.com/en/tanger.php
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Then on Sunday we have a private transfer booked with "Not Just a Tourist" to take us from Tarifa to Granada, with a lunch stop in Arcos. It's about a 5 hour drive if we do it without a stop, so the lunch stop in Arcos will be welcome.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">We have another VRBO house rented in Granada for 3 nights, which gives us some time to explore the Alhambra and the city. And it has a rooftop terrace, great for morning coffee and evening wine.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">https://www.vrbo.com/1535682ha
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Using our trusty Rick Steve's guide to Sevilla, Granada & Southern Spain, we booked a private guided tour of the Alhambra on Monday with Margarita Ortiz de Landazuri. Then on Tuesday we have a 2nd private tour with Margarita to see the rest of old Granada.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Wednesday is October 31st, so our trip will be drawing to a close. We'll be headed to Madrid for 2 nights, and then we all fly home on Friday Nov 2nd. After a full month of touring, I'm not sure how much of Madrid we will see, but I'm sure we will get into the old city for most of the day, to wander around. Currently I'm mostly looking forward to one last good meal, the specialty seems to be suckling pig
I must have painted that wall 4 times, but it just didn't turn out the way I wanted, so I left if alone for a few years. This year I finally got back to that project and talked Rob into painting it for me. He does great artwork using the wall texture mud. We decided on a new idea, I wanted a big frothy wave on that wall. Then we decided it would look better if we wrapped the blue paint around the corner into the entry hall. And then we decided to add a dolphin.

In addition I've been wanting to replace the barn door hardware with something more modern, so I ordered new hardware and once the paint was dry, Rob installed the new hardware and re-hung my door.

There were also a few settling cracks in the living room that I'd been ignoring for years, so Rob fixed those and repainted the affected walls. Somehow that all morphed into adding some trees and branches to the living room.

It's really been a fun project and I'm glad to have it all done so I can enjoy it for a while.

I've worked a lot and not been at home enough. And it's also been very wet and cool. I didn't get near enough done. The fall rains have started early, in fact right now it is POURING and getting windy. I got my potatoes dug up this afternoon, and the rains stared about 10 minutes later. It's a good afternoon just to hibernate.

Here are some pics of my vegi's. I'm happy with the potatoes this year. Though it's a good thing I like beet greens, since that's all I got from my beets.
I picked a few of the carrots, and I'll get the rest picked next week. I'm hoping for a couple of days of sunshine over the weekend.
The strawberries are also doing pretty well, they're nice and healthy. I should get a decent crop of berries next year.
But since it could be a while before they really start to bloom, I decided to paint all of my planters for a little extra color.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">And then I decided I should paint the coffee table I bought for my deck. It was supposed to be black, but looked dark brown. I'm not too happy with the blue, I may have to change that to yellow next year.
The modules I planted this spring did quite well, and they are finally up on the roof (thanks Greg!). This is the last set of modules, so next summer I'll work on replanting the ones that didn't make it through the winter. I think I'm pretty much done trying sedums, and am going to start trying different types of grasses. Also the Aleutian Speedwell is not growing well enough to save, so all of those modules from last year need to be replanted.

Anyway, I also got the rest to the rubber tiles up on the roof and my walkways between the different modules laid out.
The second project underway is the backyard. I haven't done much with it and the alders were starting to grow too tall. The lower end was very rough and rutted, running the brush hog over it didn't work, so in June I had Danny with Dutchboy Landscaping come out and tear up the weeds, then smooth out the dirt. Then he hydroseeded it. In July I wasn't sure the new grass was going to grow, but by the end of Aug it was 2+ feet tall and coming in pretty thickly. We'll keep it mowed the next couple of summers so it chokes out the alders.
In addition I removed the crushed rock from the fire pit area (which I never bothered to use) and covered that area with some typar road fabric. This week I added some galvanized steel raised beds with typar liners and today we got a pickup load of soil and filled them up. Next spring I'll plant strawberries in the 3 smaller beds, then potatoes and beets, and maybe carrots in the bigger bed.
This summer is flying by and I have a lot to get done.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Last week Danny from Dutchboy Landscaping came out and re-contoured my back yard. He smoothed out all the big lumps and ridges left from installing the drain field and then hydro seeded it. Now the grass is just starting to come up. I'm still going to have to deal with some of the weeds, but should be able to shape this up into a nice yard over the next couple of summer.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">And the new modules I planted for my roof this summer are doing really well. I wish the ones from last summer were, but most of them were winter killed. So I have a lot of re-planting to do.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Then today after running some errands in town I decided I really needed to get a step built for my front porch. It's only been 7 years....lol. It took me a couple of hours but should work just fine once the paint dries. The guys at the SBS yard where I purchased the lumber were very good about cutting the 2x6 an 2x4 exactly as I asked, so it all went together quite well.
The plan is to have Shari create and install a tile mosaic. Shari has finally decided on a plan and has started the mosaic. So I needed to remove the spacer and get her some exact measurements.

So today Robert was kind enough to stop by with a saw and an old blade and remove the space for me. It only took a couple of minutes, once he could get a small hole and a crowbar under the plywood, it just popped right out.

So now I have a 2 ft by 3 ft hole in my hallway floor, and I'm very excited and happy to have it, and I'll be even more excited to get it filled in, hopefully this fall.
We had a great visit and spent a bit of time in her glass shop. We made a couple a set of glass panels and today I finally go them up on my wall.
I really like how they look.
Thanks Mary!!
The majority were planted with Aleutian Speedwell, which I expected to fill in nicely. However we had a very hot and dry summer, and they got a bit fried. But I'm still hopeful. There are lots of little speedwell plants starting to show up. If we don't get a lot of ice this winter, and they survive, I think next summer will be much better for them.

Anyway, Greg was here yesterday and got the modules lifted up to the roof. Today I moved around some of the rubber pavers for my paths, and laid down more root barrier, then arranged the modules.

Next year, Phase 3 should be the last of the modules. I'll have to re-calculate, but I'm thinking I only need 52 more. Then Phase 4 in 2017 will involve more pavers to fill in the walking paths, and some trim!

So I spent most of Saturday afternoon and a good portion of today, getting them all planted.

Last year I planted a variety of sedums, but this year I decided to try a local plant, the Aleutian Speedwell. It's a pretty ground cover plant with purple flowers. It's known to get out of control in peoples rock gardens, but I'm looking for a lot of coverage, so most of the modules I planted this year all contain it.

Gloria pulled some of it out of her garden for me, and I had great luck last weekend in Anchorage at the Wildflower Club annual plant sale. I bought all the Aleutian Speedwell they had for sale, plus several of the members either brought me a tray full from their gardens or let me dig some out of their gardens. I was really amazed how everyone was willing to share.

Anyway, the mods are planted and I'm going to leave them on the driveway for the next couple of months so I can sort of baby them and make sure they get growing. At least thats my current plan. I had to chase a porcupine out of them earlier today, so if he comes back I may need to get them up on the roof and away from his depredations.

Tomorrow I really need to get my new ladder set up so I can get on the roof and see what survived the winter.
It's a bit more sturdy than the folding ladder I'm currently using. So I spent the evening installing the safety handles, and the Lock n Climb feet to help keep it steady. I'm rather a chicken when it comes to ladders and to heights, but I need fairly frequent access to my roof during this green roof project, which will take another couple of years.

Anyway, I'd purchased the safety handles and the Lock n Climb several months ago. So I got the ladder home and unpacked my other boxes. The safety handles were pretty easy to attach. The ladder came with a plastic "Pro Top" attached, so I had to drill out the rivets and remove it. But then the safety handles just slipped over the ends and clicked into place. I just had to tighten the attachment knob so they don't slip.

Attaching in the Lock n Climb took a bit longer. I don't know what it is about complex instruction sheets, but when I try to read one, my eyes immediately glaze over and I have no idea what any of those words mean...lol. After several re-readings and looking closely at the pictures, I got started. I had to drill a couple of holes in the ladder so I could run the bolts through, but it all went together fairly easily, if slowly.

The next step will be to take down the current ladder and put the new one in place. But that may have to wait until Saturday. It's going to take a couple extra people to maneuver it into place.
When they leaf out in the spring, they are hard to see around, and they are pretty ugly. So after an entire winter of almost no snow, we got close to a foot of spring snow the week I wanted to start this project. At least I had a sunny April day when I got started.

In their place, I planted some pink rugosa roses that Linda dug out of her garden for me. I'm hoping to have a nice rose hedge in a couple of years.

Since I didn't have the stumps pulled, I'll need to do some alder clipping the next couple of years, until the roses can smother out the alder shoots.

What do you think? It's definitely a long over due project.

However, like normal, this project got interrupted by something more fun. In this case it was a bucket of rose hips I picked a few days earlier. I'd been cleaning up the yard at my apartments which included cutting back the wild roses. I try to cut them back and clean them up every few years. I've never seen the rose hips this thick, or so ripe, so I couldn't resist picking them.

Bucket of Rose Hips

Then I had to decide what to do with them. Messing around on line, I found a recipe for Rose Hip Marmalade (Jam) It sounded interesting, so I decided to give it a try.
http://www.simplyrecipes.com/recipes/rose_hip_jelly_and_jam/

These wild rose hips aren't very big, and I had a lot of them, so it took hours and hours and hours to get them all cleaned. But boy were they pretty when I got them done.

Then I had to de-seed the 2 quarts of them to use in the marmalade. And that took many more hours. But finally I got them done, and cut up the other fruit, and got it all cooking. WOW, did it smell good. The marmalade is a bit spicy tasting, and maybe a bit too sweet. IF I make it again, I'll try cutting back the sugar a bit. But I'm happy with how it all turned out, though the whole process took me two days.

And then I had lots of rose hips left over, so I cooked them down and tried to make some jelly. That went a bit faster since I didn't have to de-seed the rose hips first. That rose hip juice is pretty tasty, and but the jelly came out as syrup. I'm not sure why, but I like to make waffles, so now I have some rose hip syrup to serve with them.

Finished Products

But that still left me with my planned project undone. So Sunday afternoon I took everything out of the closet and noticed the sheet rock had separated in the corner. I'm blaming that on earthquakes...lol. So I got out my roll of sticky fiberglass stuff, and mud and fixed up the corner.

Then today when I got home, I got the closet painted, with minimal paint splattering.

The paint dried pretty fast, so I put up the closet hanging thingies I bought at Home Depot last week. I got all of my yard tools and chainsaw hung up. And there is still room for the folding ladder when I bring that inside. I may eventually add a small shelf, but for now I'm happy that it's all cleaned up and organized.
YAY!!! http://www.westonsolutions.com/services/green_buildings/greengrid.htm

Thanks to Greg Collins it was a pretty quick endeavor. Greg & Terry brought the skid steer up to my house. We loaded the planted modules onto a pallet. Greg then lifted them up to the level of the roof, and Terry pulled them off the pallet. That part took about an hour.

Once the guys left, Valda held the ladder for me. I went up on the roof, re-arranged the rubber pavers a bit. Then I laid out more root barrier and put the modules in place.

There are 12 empty modules that need to be planted next spring, so there are some 'holes' in the layout. I put a few of the pavers in those openings to hold the root barrier fabric in place over the winter. And the walking path that divides the 2 sections needs to be added. I hope to get those rubber pavers cut to size and put in place later this month.

And there are 4 unplanted modules on the roof. Once it starts to freeze (which could be any day the way our weather has been this week), I'll sprinkle the sedum seeds I bought in them, and hope the come up and grow in the spring.

And we even got a few hours of sunshine. It was cloudy and cold this morning, the sun 'came out' about an hour before Greg & Terry showed up. Now it's getting cloudy, should be raining by midnight. I'm glad I didn't have to get up on the roof in the rain.
They've grown pretty well, I'm happy with the way they are growing and spreading. Hopefully they will continue to spread next summer and fill in the modules.

Here are a few fall pics, you can see how they've changed color as the temperatures have dropped. And most of them have bloomed. Some of the blooms are teeny tiny, but they're really pretty when you take the time to look.
I though they'd last longer, and be a bit more flexible. I didn't want to pour concrete because I was convinced it would crack & break up with all the freeze & thaw it would go through.

Anyway, it all looked good the first couple of summers, but then then pavers started to sink down into the dirt, and the steps became very concave. I spent the last couple of summers trying to hire someone to fix the mess for me, but no luck.

So I finally decided to work on it myself. I stopped at Home Depot in Kenai and picked up some professional grade landscape fabric and some bags of washed sand. As it turned out, I didn't pick up enough sand, but I got the 2 worst steps redone, and it really wasn't that bad of a job. I really hope that using the landscape fabric under the sand will stop it from washing away and/or sinking into the dirt it covers.

Step 1 - pry up the pavers. Once I can get the first one out, the rest come out pretty easily. This isn't a very good picture, but you can see that I have about half of the pavers out. Lots of grass roots to pull out from between each one and clean them up a bit.

Step 2 - smooth out the existing dirt and sand and make a level surface. Then put in a layer of landscape fabric, fill it with washed playground sand and level.

Step 3 - replace the pavers, in the same order they came out. The original workmen cut some of the pavers to make them fit. Since I don't have spares to play with, or a saw to cut new pieces, I needed to fit them back in. It was much like doing a jigsaw puzzle, with the aid of a big rubber mallet.

Step 4 - pour some of the sand on the step and brush it around so it fills in any of the cracks between the pavers. This take a while, but should help keep the grass from growing back, at least for a couple of years.

Here is a picture of the final result. As you can see the first 2 are looking ok. They will settle in a bit more the next time it really rains. The 3rd step currently in the worst shape. But I'm out of sand so will need to pick up a couple more bags when I'm home next time, so I can finish up this project later this summer.

Here is a picture of the peonies. Again its a bit over exposed, but I took it with my phone. I really love this peony plant. It seems to really like this spot.

And then later this evening when I finally got home, I put up the house numbers I ordered last fall.
(Side note: I do like to shop some of the Etsy sites, you can find a lot of hand made 'stuff' and buy directly from the person who makes it. There is a lot of junk out there too.)

https://www.etsy.com/shop/filcant?section_id=11479621

I really liked all the bright colors, and the texture of the felt creations. I didn't really need a fancy scarf, but after a few emails back & forth, Agnieszka agreed to make me a wall hanging using some of the colors I really liked. We had a few issues getting it, for some reason the first time she mailed it to me, my local post office sent it back to Poland. But I did get it the second time.

Then I needed figure out how to hang it up. After some looking around I came across with simple quilt hanger. I'm glad I ordered it, it's really easy to use.
http://www.hangitdangit.com/instructions.asp
And then I ordered some of the sleeve product. Today I sewed the sleeve on the back of the hanging and got it up on the wall.
http://www.quiltershangup.com/

It was pretty easy to hang. I really like how it looks on my living room wall. Though I'm thinking I may need to move it up a bit higher on the wall.

Let me know what you think.
It's going to take a few years to get it all done, but I'm doing it DIY. I'd love to have the whole thing done at once, but I'm going to have to piece it together as my cash flow allows.

The flat part of my roof (over the kitchen & long hallway) has always been planned to be planted. I found a dealer (Weston Solutions) in Anchorage for the GreenGrid modules who was willing to sell me the empty modules and rubber path pavers (thanks Kim!). The first set arrived last month. http://www.greengridroofs.com/

Pavers and empty modules unpacked.

<div arial="" font-family:="" helvetica="" sans-serif="" style="clear: both_>
<span style=;">

Then I went to work on the growth medium (it's not really soil). Unfortunately after several weeks of looking, I couldn't find a local greenhouse or nursery supplier who'd order expanded shale or pumice for me. So I turned to the internet and found Speciality Soils in Covington WA. http://www.specialitysoil.com/ They mixed me bags of 80% pumice and 20% coconut coir, and shipped it to me (thanks Carli!).

Growth Medium with some top soil added

I need plants that are drought resistant and can grow in 'rocky' soil, and also spread. So picked up a few at Home Depot, and some more at the Wagon Wheel. I'm not 100% sure what they all are, but I'm hopeful most of them will thrive.

And I found some of the spunbound poly root barrier I needed on line. That finally arrived on Tuesday. I'm going to use 2 layers of root barrier, 1 square inside each of the modules, and then a layer on the roof, to set the modules on. Roots growing through the modules can damage the roof membrane.

So today Valda came up and helped me plant the first batch of modules. Originally I thought we'd get 20 planted (The goal is 60 for this summer, but I may not make that one.) However we spaced the plants out a bit, hoping they will grow and fill in the empty spots. So we got 37 modules planted.

Planted Modules

Then Valda went and got some row cover she had in her shed and we covered them all. Hopefully this will keep the moose and the cranes out of them while I'm off to work.

I'm planning to leave them in the driveway until sometime in August. This will let me check their condition and see what is really growing, and what isn't, without having to get up on the roof a lot. Then in Aug I'll lay down more root barrier, put the rubber pavers in place, and then install the modules. We can put 4 modules on a pallet. Greg says he has equipment that can lift the pallet up to the roof level and we can move them into place.

Much more to follow as this progresses.Lori Murrayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12265059836589177475noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21891143.post-25967266969964880042014-05-21T17:25:00.000-08:002014-05-21T17:25:05.242-08:00May TripMy nephew Matt got married on May 10th, so mom and I went back to the wedding. I finally got around to putting them up. And I moved the Sunflower Duvet to the Murphy Bed room.

I think it's a fun combo, but I may have to move some the bird stickers, that's something to play with this spring.
And crack they did, but nothing too bad. After a couple of years (it's been almost 5) I finally got around to getting the cracks filled in. I want to fill them mostly to keep them clean. I don't like dust and other 'stuff' getting down inside.

I also had a spot that needed to be repaired. The wheels on my office chair tore up the concrete surface, where I sit in front of my computer (and I sit there a lot :-).

So after some discussion, we decided to use a marine epoxy to fill in the cracks. It has a bit of give to it, which is useful when you live in earthquake country.

For the most part, I'm pretty happy. The cracks are all well sealed. We colored the epoxy black, so the filled areas do stand out against the rest of the floor, a bit more than I'd like. But this epoxy isn't going to peel for a long while, and when I keep the floors waxed, they look pretty nice :-).

At least that's one project I've been putting off, done for now. With some luck I won't have to worry about it for a very long time.
I've spent a good portion of today, cleaning up 'stuff' from 2013. One my tasks was to clean all the photos off my camera and put them in the appropriate photo albums.

It's always fun to look at photos for the 2nd time, and a couple of these I just had to share. Sometimes the beauty of the view out my front windows, takes my breath away. I hope I never take it for granted.

And here is one out my office window. The winter light in the Arctic is amazing, even if the sun doesn't really rise for 54 days....and I do count those days.
Last but not least are a couple of Christmas photos. I didn't do much decorating this year, since I wasn't going to be home. But I did need to make a new wreath that would accent my new door. The giant red bow I've used the past few years just wasn't going to work since I had the front door painted.
And here are my snowman stickers. I really think they're cute. I peeled them off the wall today and stuck them to some waxed paper. Hopefully I can use them again next year.
